I just started reading this thread and I remember that somewhere way back
there (maybe a few months ago) I mentioned that the colony at the South Jetty
probably proposed a health hazard. Things like dysentery, cholera, etc.
Seems that they have a bit of Shigella

Go back and read some more. There were only 13 reported cases, and none
since July.
And all the people are gone off the spit, with only 4 being arrested.
(PLEASE NOTE; when I write about the people on the spit, I am not taking into
account the druggies and alcoholics unless I mention them specifically)
These people have been scattered thoughout the city and county, some in
hotels here and there, some in the county campground on the north peninsula,
and a couple on the old Table Bluff Indian reservation. I have been to one
of the hotels and talked to a lady there whose husband is disabled. It is
still like a big family, with a few missing, where when someone needs help
others pitch in.
There are people everywhere who need help for one reason or another, unable
to shop or do certain chores, etc. With many of these people on the spit
they pitched in and helped one another. A lot of them can still do that for
a short time, being bunched together in the same hotel or campground. But
what about after their time there is up? And they have to move on to
separate places...There will be older folks who have no one around to shop
for them, disabled who have no one there to help them with chores they are
not able to handle...etc. They will be separated and alone...and forgotten.

There are a few who go to help, which made it easy to help a lot of people
when they were together. But after they are separated it will be harder to
reach them all. Someone who only needs help only occasionally will soon fall
thru the cracks...the few people who do put aside time to help them will be
stretched to the limit with their time.................
