For European Gatherings, this is still mostly true. Course if you're hungry,
there aren't any other kitchens to check for food. It's much easier to get
by with one kitchen for a 1000 people or so, but I seriously doubt one kitchen
could feed an entire gathering of 20,000. Back when there weren't as many
kitchens are there are today, I remember going hungry alot more....

There was more unity, but that was related as much to the fact that there was
less people, and it was easier to get to know folks. There was also less
conciousness on sanitation, and many other health aspects that are more refined
these days.

I think that one of the reasons the kitchens are spread out is cause many
of them are also people's camps, and folks want some space and privacy. I'd
guess that the majority of "kitchens" are just there to feed that camp, and
the occasional person that strolls in.
