Ah, an interesting philosophical question, one which I have pondered lo
these many years.
The answer I have come up with is that celibacy does indeed mean
refraining from any sexual activity at all, including autoeroticism (great
work, eh?). Celibacy, I believe, implies that one has chosen to forego
sexual pleasure altogether, usually in the course of some religious or
spiritual discipline.
Abstinence, on the other hand would properly refer to refraining from
sexual activity with another person, but would not require the
renunciation (another good word) of sexual pleasure itself. Go for it,
dude.
