You may already be aware that DC INITIATIVE 37 will be on
the Special Election ballot on September 14 when voters go to the
polls to choose a new City Council Chairman.
INITIATIVE 37 allows voters to lay the first block in
structuring a society which rules by reason rather than through
military conflict. It is an opportunity for District voters to
be leaders in worldwide economic conversion--the process of
smoothly converting weapons industries into enterprises that
further the well-being of a peaceful society--beginning with and
funded by the many billions of tax dollars that will become
available annually when we eliminate nuclear weapons.
INITIATIVE 37 expresses the view that an appropriate way to
accomplish these goals is for the United States and the
Commonwealth of Independent States to lead by example. The idea
is simple, and so basically good that 18,000-plus registered (and
7,000 unregistered) voters quickly signed the petition and put
INITIATIVE 37 on the ballot. Hundreds of thousands of people
from all over the world have signed other, non-binding petitions
to lawmakers of the United States and the former Soviet Union to
enact economic conversion principles into law.
It is appropriate, fiting, and hopeful that the citizens of
Washington, D.C. should be the first to adopt this idea. We are,
after all, living at Ground Zero. More intimately than anyone
else we see the results of political infighting. Taught that
violence is power, our children are killing each other.
Homelessness is rampant. Many people face probably unemployment
from deep bedget cuts. District voters are among the most aware
and most threatened of America's citizens, and know how to make a
good decision.
Unfortunately, the Washington Post came out in opposition to
INITIATIVE 37 on August 28th, so we especially need your help!
We are confident that there are enough decent people in DC that
more folks will vote for INITIATIVE 37 than against it. But this
is ony the first step. WE WANT TO WIN BY A LANDSLIDE.
WE NEED HELP IMMEDIATELY TO RECRUIT VOLUNTEERS TO WORK AT
THE 140 POLLS ON ELECTION TUESDAY BETWEEN 7:00 AM AND 8:00 PM.
WILL YOU BE ABLE TO HELP BY MAKING PHONE CALLS _NOW_, BY
VOLUNTEERING ON ELECTION TUESDAY, OR IN SOME OTHER WAY? YOU
DON'T HAVE TO BE A DC RESIDENT TO HELP!
There will be an election eve coordinating meeting Monday,
September 13, from 5-9 pm in the small conference room, on the
second floor of the Reeves Center at 14th and U St NW (Green Line
Metro, U Street exit). If you can't make it to the meeting call
us at 202-462-0757 and we'll send you materials you need.
Peace through understanding,
Ellen Thomas, Treasurer
