I think the best bets for free net access are FIDOnet (which is bridged to/from
the internet) and Usenet (I think it still exists) which folks with PCs can
hook up to by getting uuPC (or a similar program) running on their machine
and contacting their nearest net-neighbor to arrange a news feed. Note:
nearest net-neighbor is a term with a bit of baggage attached (ex. some
sites require nodes that they directly feed to serve as feeds to at least N
other nodes, a neighbor may be a toll call away,...).
I can try to check into so of this if you like. I haven't really played with
it directly in several years since I've been at internet sites for a while.
